Focused conversation: Spotlight on the Middle East
Weak institutions in Egypt and the Middle East prevent women from participating in politics, business and other areas of society. Women are usually most active in the informal economy, which often entails unfair working conditions and problematic environments. Policymakers and advocates must address the barriers that women face to enter the formal private and public sectors.
Social networking technologies allow women to share and expose the challenges they face in their societies as well as maintain open channels of communication and information exchange. Women can help empower each other by sharing their experiences and expertise in politics, corruption and overcoming discriminatory social norms.
